To be honest I am a little guilty of not taking this topic very seriously as a person of color. I feel like there might be a lot of people in this world that feel like they are not very good at anything because they are too young. I feel like there are a lot of younger black people that feel like they are not very good at anything because they are too young.
It is true that there are people in our world that are not very good at anything. Some of these people are very old; others are very young. But the same thing is happening to people of color as well. The only people that are really bad at everything are people of color. Our brains are built to deal with complex tasks and they are not built to handle our social status.
It definitely hurts when people think our society is discriminatory when in reality, it is not. People of all ages are discriminated against in every field. If there is a way to solve a problem, we are going to do it.
This is an issue of identity politics and all of us constantly see the same thing happening to us as part of the cultural landscape. It’s not just the tech, it’s the politics.
The other thing to take away from the story is that if your characters have a pretty good sense of color, you are more likely to be seen as the black on a nice white background because you know it’s cool to wear white clothes, and your character has pretty good sense of color. You can’t be too good with that. It’s also important to keep in mind that you’re not showing the white man’s face at the party, it’s just showing his eyes.
The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them as they control us.
Just like a person with no self-awareness is stuck in a time loop, people like Colt Vahn who are stuck on autopilot are stuck in a time loop where they can’t stop themselves from doing things. They can’t stop themselves from running the world and making it a better place. In fact, they can’t stop themselves from doing so much of it that there’s no stopping it. Because it’s just too much.
This is also the first time we see actual evidence of age discrimination. A few years ago, Colt Vahn would have been an object of scorn in the eyes of the older technology geeks. But now he’s a celebrity. He’s getting praise from some of the younger generations, including one who has been called “the future of mankind.” He’s also got the internet to thank for helping him get noticed. So yes, the guy is clearly a huge, popular, and influential figure.
Ageism is a huge problem in the tech industry. Our own research found “that more than 40% of all new hires are under the age of 40” and that “there are twice as many under-represented minorities in tech jobs as there are in the general workforce.” Now, I’m not saying don’t hire people. We do have a solution. But if you’re hiring for a tech position, you should also be hiring for the fact that its a very safe job.
