The problem is when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.

Maybe a more complete self-awareness would require some sort of meta-cognition. For example, when we see a time loop, we can say, “Hmm… I don’t remember this. That’s just a pattern that’s repeating for me.” Or, we could be able to say, “Hmm… I have been drinking a lot of vodkas for a long time.

It doesn’t actually matter if we’re aware of the loop, but we definitely do need to be aware of one thing: time. The way we think about time and how we perceive it are two completely different things. If you think about it, time isn’t really a physical thing, it’s a mental concept. You can’t see time on Earth, but you can see it in the minds of other people.

The fact is we can never really understand the mind of another person. We can only ever see the mind of the one we are looking at. Because the mind is a fluid thing, the mind of another person is not static. It’s always changing. In the mind of the person you are looking at, you are never static. The person you are looking at will always be changing.
