So I think it has to do with the idea that the technology director isn’t the person who is actually doing the work to get the job. I’d rather a tech director spend a few years working for an engineer, or an accountant, or a marketing manager, or an operations manager.
I think it’s all about the money. I personally know someone who got hired before they had an MBA. They were paid a lot less than their peers and they got to make their own choices about what they would choose to do with their careers. They chose to go out in a different direction and that could have been good, but it was bad to not have the opportunity to make a choice.
Jobs are often a combination of a great education, a great attitude, and a good work ethic. It seems that many people, including ourselves, who are good at what they do end up with a lot of crap. If you are good at what you do and are looking for a better job, then there are a lot of people who are trying to hire you. You must be good at what you do to get hired.
