I am always amazed at the amount of people who are using assistive technology for the very best reasons. We can’t do everything, but we can do a lot. I used to think that my personal needs were not being met while using assistive technologies, but I now know that there are millions of people with disabilities who are so grateful for the technology that is available to them.
The reason that the vast majority of people with disabilities are using assistive technology is that this technology is so pervasive that it is difficult to avoid. When we are stuck in a wheel chair, we have to keep reteaching ourselves to walk. When we get out of a car, we have to keep trying to put on our prosthetic leg. When I travel, I can’t just buy a car without a driver’s license, I have to do my best to be as efficient as possible.
As I’ve stated before, technology is not just a boon for the blind, it is also a massive blessing to those who choose to use it themselves. I’ve used assistive technology to help me with everything from helping me get around to helping with my medication. I had my own assistive device when I was a kid to help me with my eyesight, and I use it to help me with my writing now.
I use two different assistive devices: a very old-school cane and a new assistive keyboard. The cane is just for walking with and is pretty easy to use. The assistive keyboard is the new standard for people who need a computer and use a cane as a crutch. It works like a tablet and has a touchpad on the side to control everything you want.
The assistive devices are great, but I’m surprised I haven’t used mine more often. I haven’t had any issues with it. It’s pretty much a simple, sturdy, and comfortable thing. It’s also very easy to get to.
Most of the time I’m using a cane as a crutch. My first choice was a wooden cane (the one I’ve used from the day I was born) and it’s a good thing I learned how to use it in the first place. I know I could use a cane and a mouse to get the hang of it without having to learn how to use a crutch.
The cane was something that I learned how to use after growing up in a house where we would walk with a cane. It is more of a walking stick than a crutch, but the cane I have is about the same length that I used as a child. The cane I have has a very small, flat, and narrow handle. It’s more of a walking stick than a crutch.
The cane that I have is the ’76 version of the PalmSqueak, and while it is more useful as a walking stick than a crutch, it still has a flat, narrow, and small handle for the same reason. Also, unlike my cane, it allows me to use it to hold a pen in my hand. I use it to hold my pen and hold in my palm the screen that I am using to write the code I am writing.
I have been using my PalmSqueak now for about an hour and it is still doing its job. I can hold it in one hand and type on my keyboard, and if I do not have a pen in my hand, I can either hold my palm flat, or use it as a cane. I am not the only one who has found success with this new assistive technology. Google has made a new one called the “PalmSqueak, with a Pen.
