I love animals, but it is hard to find homes for them. They are so much more than a pet or a pet’s best friend. They are a part of my family and I love them to pieces.
Animals are so much more than that. As I’ve stated in previous blogs, animal shelters are filled with animals that are in worse shape than what we see on TV. For example, at one shelters we saw a cat that had been left to die on the streets of the city. The shelter was hoping to adopt her and she was so skinny she couldn’t even come to the shelter. She was so sad, it was heartbreaking.
If you have a dog, you almost need to be a veterinarian to realize just how many animals are in need of care at shelters. In some cases dogs and cats are in horrible, hopeless situations, and it’s heartbreaking to see them. But as someone who works in a shelter, I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of these animals and I’ve seen them in person and in their homes.
A lot of shelter dogs have suffered from severe injuries and some are so badly crippled in the fighting cages that they have to be euthanized. In general though, shelters have the greatest ability to save the most lives, and animals are often just as traumatized as their human caregivers.
Animals have been so traumatized by human violence that they don’t often trust humans unless they are trained to feel safe. Because of this, shelters have an extensive arsenal of non-lethal methods of preventing the animals from attacking, including isolation, sleep deprivation, isolation, and separation from humans.
In the new trailer, we see an all-night vigil for Harrison Ford’s wife, Francine, who is a shelter pet and has been taken away from her human family. This is not the first time this has happened, but it’s the first time that the trailer has shown the full depth of it.
The trailer also shows us the shelter’s training methods of locking up dogs and cats in cages that are not attached to a chain. The idea is that if a shelter pet is cornered, locked up, and separated from its owner, the dog will be more likely to attack a victim if it is separated from it’s owner. The trailers also shows a couple of shelters that employ a dog bite guard that keeps a dog in the room for a few minutes at a time before the dog is released.
I see this as a step in the right direction. It really should be a part of every shelter I visit, maybe even in every shelter I visit. It’s a great way to teach the dog and cat how to interact with each other.
I think it’s great that shelters are incorporating this into their programs, but I think it’s a little over-hyped. It’s not a case of dog/cat “socialization”, it’s more like the dog is more likely to get along with a human if it’s not tied up or locked away. Of course, the dog is also more likely to get along with a human if it’s not chained up either.
