The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) has invented a new type of artificial intelligence that is being used in the research experiments of our future. Designing and processing huge amounts of information – or “mapping” – it is capable of recognizing objects like their smell and even their faces, which give a much more human-like appearance. In this article, you’ll learn something about the GITP research project that’s been going on since 2010: the development of a system that can be programmed to act like a robot. This technology could eventually lead to a much more intelligent form of artificial intelligence for all robotic systems being developed.

The GIST is a unique project of the Georgia Institute of Technology ( It was founded in 2016 to help researchers and other educators learn how to think through physics in a way that’s engaging, fun and effective. The GIST has been honored with a number of national awards and foundation grants, most recently the National Science Foundation’s 2018 Breakthrough Award for Discovering New Ways to Understand, Explain and Teach Physics.
