The biggest problem with self-awareness is that it feels like the only way to know if you’re doing it right or wrong, is to do it wrong. We’re all just making stuff up.

Because of this, we often fall back into the trap of pretending that there are no rules to what makes us “self-aware.” Sure if we could only have one rule, maybe you wouldn’t be able to do what you want to do, or if you have one rule, you can’t break that rule. But most people aren’t that good at it.
It’s easy to get into self-awareness and forget there are no rules in which we are free to do what we want to do. You may have had a lot of problems with those, but nobody ever gets into self-awareness.
We’ve all heard the phrase, “You can’t get more rules than that.” We probably agree with that. But we also know that there are other rules than those that we can only obey by paying someone to tell us what to do. There are other rules and behaviors that we can consciously choose to do. The problem is that we are just too lazy to actually learn how to make that happen.
The reason why we are all so lazy is that we actually don’t know how to do anything. It’s a very dangerous condition. We forget that we are lazy because we haven’t been taught to value the things we do. We’ve been taught to value the things we spend time on and the things we don’t do. The more we are rewarded for doing those things, the more we are willing to do them.
What you probably don’t understand is that we have to learn to be a little more mindful of what we do when we act in a way that we know we should have learned. That’s why we are so lazy. We have to learn to act in a way that we know we should have learned.
